BIRMINGHAM’S ‘FESTIVAL of ACTING and MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT’ RULES

1.) ENTRY.

B.F.A.M.E. is made up of five sections: -

One Act. (Adult-Group) }
One Act. (Youth-Group) }B.F.A.M.E. Festival Week
Individual Work (Youth) }

Full Length Drama (Adult-Group) Peripatetic
Full Length Musical (Adult-Group) Peripatetic

For the purposes of the One Act Youth Section. The definition of Youth is taken to be where the entire cast is under the age of 19 years on the last night of the Festival. [Adult groups may use youth members to play children’s parts.]

The One Act Adult Section of the Festival also forms the First Round of the All-England Theatre Festival competition. See Section 2.

All entries must be submitted on the official entry form and be returned by the due date, together with the appropriate entry fee, as indicated on the entry form.

A copy of the script/libretto and score should be submitted with each entry application or as dictated on the entry form.

NOTE

Photostat copies will not be acceptable unless prior permission has been obtained from the copyright holders.

Entries may be rejected by the Guild whose decision is final.


2.) ALL-ENGLAND THEATRE FESTIVAL

Any society wishing to enter the All-England Theatre Festival (A.E.T.F.) National Competition via the B.F.A.M.E. festival must declare that intention on the ‘ENTRY FORM’.

Any society wishing to enter the A.E.T.F. National Competition via the B.F.A.M.E. Festival, must be willing to: -

Go forward to all subsequent rounds if selected to do so.
Abide by the A.E.T.F. rules, which can be obtained on request.
Any youth group who wishes to enter the A.E.T.F. Section of the Festival may do so. They will however be adjudicated and marked as a One Act Adult-Group.

3.) GENERAL

The B.D.T.G. produces Birmingham’s Festival of Acting and Musical Entertainment. The Festival Officer has overall control of the Festival.
The results and the presentation of all awards will take place on the final night of the B.F.A.M.E. Festival Week.
A full list of trophies available within the Festival is shown in Appendix 1.

NOTE  No award will be presented unless a standard worthy of reward, in the view of the adjudicator, has been achieved.

If the production incorporates live music, the setting up of the musicians will be included within the setting time as laid down in 4/3.
The Guild will NOT be responsible for any expenses incurred by your production or by your participation in the Festival.

A claim can be made on the official claim form for assistance with set transportation expenses. (One Act entries only.): -
If the Festival makes an overall profit, assistance may be given.
Advanced ticket sales made by companies making a claim will also be taken into account.
Competing groups are entitled to complimentary tickets for the night of their performance, during Festival Week. The maximum allocation is the cast plus four.

4.) PERFORMANCE

This section applies specifically to those entries taking part during the Festival Week. For the rules governing performance in the Peripatetic Sections of the Festival, please see Appendix 2.

Individual work is performed in accordance with the requirements shown in Appendix 3.

No scenery/set should take more than ten minutes to set or five minutes to strike.

Each entry should be at least thirty minutes in length and should not exceed the time limit of fifty-five minutes in performance.

Penalties for NOT keeping within the allotted times for performance, setting or striking shall be as follows: -

Up to 1 minute over or under time……1 mark
Up to 2 minutes over or under time..…3 marks
Up to 3 minutes over or under time…..6 marks
Up to 4 minutes over or under time…10 marks
Up to 5 minutes over or under time…15 marks
More than 5 minutes over or under time ….Disqualification.

These deductions will not be taken into account when considering the overall Festival winner.

The Guild will appoint a Stage Director, whose decision on all Back-Stage matters shall be final.

The Guild will appoint a Stage Manager who will be responsible for the safe running and control of the Back Stage areas.

The Guild will appoint an Electrician who will be responsible for the control of the lighting desk and lighting equipment, under the direction of the Company Stage Manager.

The Guild will appoint a Sound Technician who will be responsible for the control of the sound desk and sound equipment, under the direction of the Company Stage Manager.

If the entry is copyrighted, it is the company’s responsibility to see that the author's permission is obtained for the performance and that the royalty fee is paid in advance.

If the text has been altered in any way for the performance, the Stage Manager will ask for proof of the author’s permission.

The license must be presented to the Stage Manager at the Technical meeting. If not presented by the start of the performance the entry will be classed as Non Competitive.

5.) PRESENTATION

This section applies specifically to those entries taking part during the Festival Week. For the rules governing presentation in the Peripatetic Sections of the Festival, please see Appendix. 2.

The stage will be set out as shown on the attached drawing. Appendix. 4.

Costumes and scenery are left to the discretion of the participating societies, but they must comply with the theatre Fire/Safety regulations.

Ingenuity in creating the right artistic impression will be taken into account.

6.) ADJUDICATOR

The Guild will engage the services of a suitably qualified adjudicator for the Festival Week.
There will be one adjudicator for the Festival Week.
The adjudicator can provide a written adjudication if required. This must be requested on the entry form, and will be charged at the current GODA rate payable to the Guild before the start of the Festival Week.

The Guild will appoint two Peripatetic Reviewers and make all other necessary arrangements.
There will be no written adjudication for each Peripatetic entry.
The adjudicator will give a public adjudication at the end of each evening during the Festival Week. 

The adjudicator will be available to talk to the individual companies privately following the evening’s performance.
The adjudicator will use the following system of marks: -

Musical (F/L Only)

Acting 40 Musical Attainment 20
Production 35 Dramatic Attainment 20
Stage Presentation 15 Production 35
Endeavor, Originality &Theatrical Entertainment 10 Stage Presentation 15
    Interpretation 10
Total 100   100

The adjudicator's and reviewer's decision will be final.

APPENDIX. 2.

SPECIFIC RULES RELATING TO THE PERIPATETIC FULL LENGTH COMPETITION

THESE SHOULD BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RULES FOR ‘BIRMINGHAM’S FESTIVAL OF ACTING AND MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT’.

A2-1.) PERFORMANCE

The entry must be at least 90 minutes in length. (Excluding any intervals.)

A2-2.) PRESENTATION

The performance will be in front of a paying audience, NOT a dress, technical or performance put on especially for the adjudicator.

The entry will comprise of one performance of your production, at the venue of your choice.

You will make available two seats for the reviewers. 

APPENDIX. 3.

SPECIFIC RULES RELATING TO INDIVIDUAL YOUTH WORK

A3-1.) DRAMA DUOLOGUES

Both participants must be under the age of 19 years, on the first day of the Festival Week.
The entry must be between 3 and 5 minutes in length.

A3-2.) SINGING

Open to any one who is under the age of 19 years, on the first day of the Festival Week.
The piece should not last longer than 5 minutes.
The Guild can not provide a piano; cd's, tapes, minidiscs and guitars are permitted.

A3-3.)DRAMA - UNDER 14 AGE GROUP

Open to any one who has not reached their 14th birthday by the first day of the Festival Week.
This should be a single piece of between 3 and 5 minutes in length.
A maximum of two hand-props may be used.
Costume is not allowed other than as a suggestion.
No set or props are allowed, other than 2 chairs and a table, supplied and set by the Guild.

A3-4.)DRAMA - OVER 14 AGE GROUP

Open to any one who is under the age of 19 years, on the first day of the Festival Week.
This should be a single piece of between 3 and 5 minutes in length.
A maximum of two hand-props may be used.
Costume is not allowed other than as a suggestion.
No set or props are allowed, other than 2 chairs and a table, supplied and set by the Guild.

A3-5.) POETRY - UNDER 14 AGE GROUP

Open to any one who has not reached their 14th birthday by the first day of the Festival Week.
The total performance should not last longer than 5 minutes.
You must perform TWO pieces. One of which must be from the list supplied by the Guild.
No props or set are allowed.

A3-6.) POETRY - OVER 14 AGE GROUP

Open to any one who is under the age of 19 years, on the first day of the Festival Week.
The total performance should not last longer than 5 minutes.
You must perform TWO pieces. One of which must be from the list supplied by the Guild.[The Guild’s piece will be a Sonnet.]
No props or set are allowed.
